Summary

On the night of his twelfth birthday, Charles sneaks into the kitchen in his pyjamas. The clock is about to strike midnight. All he has to do is make a wish and blow out the candle really hard, just as his Granny taught him… Except that this time, nothing goes as usual! His wish takes the form of Grou, a Cro-Magnon man who takes him on a journey through time. From the Big Bang to the most significant events of the last century, this anachronistic duo sets off on an adventure in the footsteps of humanity.

What better than the past to help us shed light on today and look towards tomorrow? Grou! succeeds with wild inventiveness in this daring feat: transporting us through the ages, in a narrative blending everyday and grand history, all from the seemingly realistic setting of a kitchen. From the repurposing of objects to wordplay, the magic works. We are lifted from our seats, propelled under a hail of shells or amidst the stars. And as the stage transforms into a place of infinite possibilities, the realm of dreams opens up, a marvellous springboard for understanding reality.

Following last season’s reimagining of the road trip *Bonjour, on est un tsunami*, we are delighted to welcome back the Compagnie Renards/Effet Mer for a whirlwind journey through our shared history. And it doesn’t matter if we feel tiny in the face of what came before us; Grou! is here to remind us that our power to act here and now is – in itself – infinitely great.

Co-presented with Pierre de Lune

A lovely story of an impossible friendship that ticks all the right boxes for young readers.

If, after that, there are still children who get bored at the theatre, we’ll throw in the towel.

Laurence Bertels, La Libre, August 2018

With an Indiana Jones-style sense of adventure, our two characters – a self-conscious teenager and a mysterious caveman – take a fast-forwarded look at the history of humanity, to reassure themselves about our species, which is capable of both the worst and
the best.

Catherine Makereel, Le Soir, August 2018

One of the finest performances at the Avignon Festival

The inspiration for this story comes from a news item in Germany: one day, a father in Berlin started wearing dresses out of solidarity with his son, who wanted to dress only in that way. Working in perfect harmony, Clément Thirion and Marie Henry have crafted a colourful and joyful story about our relationship with social norms.
