Summary

During puberty, teenagers are bombarded with normative expectations, reinforcing gender-based inequalities and violence. With this new choreographic piece, Leslie Mannès imagines alternative narratives. On stage, bodies break free, take up space, and express a plurality of voices and thoughts. The rumble of their anger, joy or tenderness is met with the hope of collective change, far removed from alienating stereotypes.

For several years now, we have witnessed a simultaneous movement of liberated speech with #MeToo and uninhibited sexist stances, reinforced by the rise of the far right and support for the masculinist movement. The show takes the form of a double dedication: to our loved ones – the lineages of women of yesterday, today and tomorrow – and to our bodies – bruised, abused, silenced. It urges us to take the road less travelled to challenge our identities, to embark on the adventure of reinvention, and to make love an act of dissent.

To Our Beloved is part of the cycle Our Volcanoes, Our Tenderness, conceived by Leslie Mannès for young people aged 12 to 15. It revolves around the ecology of social relations and the notions of cooperation and citizenship, with a focus on gender equality. As with her other creations, the Varia’s partner artist has devised a framework that encourages encounters and the emergence of shared imaginations.

Co-presented with Pierre de Lune.

Rectum Crocodile sounds like the title of a quirky noir novel, but it is a fabulous tale in which the characters parade in magnificent finery. Thus, ghosts, humans and beasts mingle, trees speak, and together, this colourful crowd attempts to atone for a stubborn colonialism.
