Sugar Island est un lieu. Une île, un organisme vivant, une danse. C'est le système du ballet qui se fissure, une étrange connexion de familiarité et de mystère incarnée dans la même source. Sugar Island est de l'autre côté. Au loin. Au plus profond. Sugar Island est terre, muscle, ligament, rideau d'or, lumières. C'est classique, artificiel, pop, bizarre. C'est le sentiment déroutant d'être trop éveillé…

Dans la continuité de ses pièces précédentes, la chorégraphe madrilène Cuqui Jerez propose une création autour du processus artistique de « suspension de sens », cherchant à questionner et déconstruire nos automatismes de spectateur·ices, pour nous inviter à vivre de nouvelles expériences esthétiques et contemplatives. Brouillant la frontière entre les régimes de la présentation et de la représentation, elle dissout cette dichotomie pour inventer un lieu à la surface du réel. 

Après Magical and Elastic au Kaaitheater en 2022, le travail de Cuqui Jerez est à nouveau présenté en Belgique, pour notre plus grande joie. Formée à l'origine au classique, dont elle connaît les codes et techniques, elle cherche à élargir la notion de danse et de chorégraphie. Trente ans après sa formation initiale, elle se prête à un exercice critique de la discipline à travers sa pratique chorégraphique, les langages contemporains et une dimension politique, mettant en tension ces codes avec d'autres manières de faire et de concevoir la danse.

Sugar Island is a place. An island, a living organism, a dance. A complex codification! It’s a ballet system that cracks, a weird connection between familiarity and mystery, born from the same source. Sugar Island is on the other side. Far away. Deep down. Sugar Island is breaking – from the inside out. Concentrated. Sugar Island is earth, muscles, ligaments, golden curtains, lights. It is classical, artificial, pop, weird. Sugar Island is not Agon. Sugar Island is Brousse. It is a confusing feeling of being awake. Sugar Island is located in Lake Erie, Ohio. 

With Sugar Island, Cuqui Jerez continues her quest for a suspension of the senses. In this way, she builds on the trilogy of performances, Las Ultracosas, Mágica y Elástica, and Supernova, which have been presented at various festivals and venues in Europe and Mexico. In this investigation, Cuqui enables abstract choreographic experiences to clash with the everyday, the artificial, the classical, and the other. 

Boundaries between presentation and representation blur. Jerez seeks an in-between space, in which cracks in reality can arise. In a difficult-to-name experience – a kind of hallucination – she unravels the hierarchy of our consciousness. Playing with a ballet system and with codification, Cuqui brings us an absurd performance in a manner as playful as it is irreverent.

• Following her last passage at Kaaitheater in 2022 with Magical and Elastic, Cuqui Jerez's work will be presented again in Belgium. Originally trained in classical dance, whose codes and techniques she knows well, she wants to broaden the concept of dance and choreography. Thirty years after her initial training, she takes a critical look at the discipline through her choreographic practice, contemporary languages and a political dimension, placing these codes in tension with other ways of making and conceiving dance.

Het is een balletsysteem dat kraakt, een vreemde verbinding tussen vertrouwdheid en mysterie ontstaan in dezelfde bron. Sugar Island ligt aan de andere kant. Ver weg. Diep vanbinnen. Sugar Island is aan het breken. Van binnen naar buiten. Geconcentreerd. Sugar Island is aarde, spieren, ligament, gouden gordijn, lichten. Het is klassiek, artificieel, pop, vreemd. Sugar Island is niet Agon. Sugar Island is Brousse. Het is een verwarrend gevoel van wakker zijn. Sugar Island ligt in Lake Erie, Ohio.

Met Sugar Island zet Cuqui Jerez haar queeste naar een opschorting van onze zintuigen verder. Zo borduurt ze voort op de trilogie van performances Las Ultracosas, Mágica y Elástica en Supernova, gepresenteerd op verschillende festivals en locaties in Europa en Mexico. In dit onderzoek laat Cuqui abstracte choreografische ervaringen clashen met het alledaagse, het artificiële, het classicisme en het vreemde.  

Grenzen tussen presentatie en representatie vervagen. Jerez zoekt naar een tussenruimte waarin barsten in de werkelijkheid kunnen ontstaan. In een moeilijk te benoemen ervaring, een soort hallucinatie, rafelt ze de hiërarchie van ons bewustzijn uit elkaar. Spelend met een balletsysteem en met codificatie, brengt Cuqui ons een absurde voorstelling op een zowel speelse als oneerbiedige wijze.  

Een stuk in samenwerking met Cécile Brousse, Óscar Bueno, Javi Cruz en Gilles Gentner.  

 

• Na haar laatste passage bij Kaaitheater in 2022 met Magical and Elastic wordt het werk van Cuqui Jerez opnieuw in België gepresenteerd. Oorspronkelijk opgeleid in de klassieke dans, waarvan ze de codes en technieken goed kent, wil ze het begrip dans en choreografie verruimen. Dertig jaar na haar initiële opleiding bekijkt ze de discipline kritisch via haar choreografische praktijk, hedendaagse talen en een politieke dimensie, waarbij ze deze codes in spanning plaatst met andere manieren om dans te maken en te concipiëren.
