RÉSUMÉ
Au 19e siècle, fut retrouvé dans la campagne anglaise un mystérieux manuscrit composé d’extraits de journal intime et de poèmes d’amour écrits par une certaine Ester. Elle y décrit comment, à force de s’abandonner corps et âme à ses bien-aimés, elle disparaît peu à peu. Alberto Cortés met en miroir l'abandon à l'être aimé et son propre abandon face au public : il dessine les contours de cette relation définie par le fait de regarder et d’être regardé, et en conclut qu’à force d’être regardé, on finit par disparaître. Il a donc décidé de ne présenter la pièce que 50 fois ; au-delà, elle sera consumée par le regard du public, telle une bougie. Cortés interroge également l’existence d’une dévotion queer, et la relie à l’espoir d’un avenir nouveau.
Après s’être révélé au public du festival l’an dernier avec Analphabet, Cortés revient avec une performance hypnotisante, mêlant littérature, subtilité et épanchement romantique. Confession poétique, El corazón de Ester décrit la nature performative de l’amour – qui nous épuise autant qu’il nous nourrit –, la dimension existentielle de la solitude et la vulnérabilité du corps. C’est une pièce rituelle dans laquelle la scène est un lieu de pèlerinage consacré à la dévotion, au risque et à l’amour, qui se fait également un plaidoyer en faveur de la performance.
Kunstenfestivaldesarts est un festival international d’arts de la scène dédié au théâtre et à la danse contemporaine, aux performances et aux arts visuels. Il se déroule chaque année dans une trentaine de lieux culturels et dans l’espace public à Bruxelles, pendant trois semaines en mai. Contemporain, il accompagne des artistes confirmé·es ou émergent·es dans la création d'œuvres artistiques audacieuses et ancrées dans notre monde actuel. International, il invite des artistes du monde entier à nous confronter à une diversité de pratiques artistiques et de points de vue. Bruxellois, il reflète l’identité et la diversité de la ville et il encourage la mobilité entre les publics, les communautés et les quartiers.
In the 19th century, a mysterious manuscript was found in the English countryside, containing diary excerpts and love poems written by a woman named Ester. In the texts, she describes how she slowly disappears by giving herself completely to her loved ones. Alberto Cortés draws a parallel between surrendering to a lover and surrendering to the audience—each relationship determined by watching and being watched, and how being watched ultimately causes one to disappear. That is why he has limited the life of this performance to 50 presentations, after which it will be exhausted by the audience’s gaze, like a candle finally extinguished. Cortés also wonders whether there is such a thing as queer devotion, and links this to the hope for a new future.
After the success of Analphabet, Cortés presents another hypnotic performance in which literature, delicacy, and romantic confessions come together in a graceful alliance. El corazón de Ester is a poetic confession about the performativity of love that both nourishes and wears us out, the existential dimension of loneliness, and the vulnerability of the body. It is a ritual performance about the stage as a place of pilgrimage for devotion, risk, and love—and a plea for more care for performing.
Kunstenfestivaldesarts is an international performing arts festival dedicated to contemporary theatre, dance, performance and visual arts. Every year, it takes place in Brussels during three weeks in May, in some thirty cultural venues and public spaces in Brussels. Contemporary: it supports both established and up-and-coming artists with the creation of bold artistic work rooted in today’s world. International: artists from all over the world are invited to confront us with diverse artistic practices and perspectives. Of Brussels: it aims to reflect the diversity of Brussels and encourage mobility between audiences, cultures and neighbourhoods.
In de 19de eeuw werd op het Engelse platteland een mysterieus manuscript gevonden met dagboekfragmenten en liefdesgedichten van een vrouw genaamd Ester. In haar teksten beschrijft ze hoe ze langzaam verdwijnt door zich volledig over te geven aan haar geliefden. Alberto Cortés trekt een parallel tussen die overgave aan een geliefde en zijn eigen overgave aan een publiek. Hoe deze relatie wordt bepaald door bekijken en bekeken worden, en hoe bekeken worden uiteindelijk doet verdwijnen. Kunstenfestivaldesarts is een internationaal podiumkunstenfestival dat in het teken staat van hedendaags theater en dans, performance en beeldende kunst. Het festival vindt elk jaar plaats in Brussel, gedurende drie weken in mei op een dertigtal culturele locaties en in de publieke ruimte in Brussel. Hedendaags: het festival begeleidt gevestigde en opkomende kunstenaars in de creatie van avontuurlijk artistiek werk dat verankerd is in de wereld van vandaag. Internationaal: het festival nodigt kunstenaars van over de hele wereld uit om het publiek in contact te brengen met een brede waaier aan artistieke praktijken en perspectieven. Brussels: het festival wil de diversiteit van Brussel weerspiegelen en de mobiliteit tussen publieken, culturen en buurten bevorderen.
