If we cannot escape our fate, can we survive it? Bordering on satire, and exploring themes of power, pollution and family secrets, Héloïse Ravet takes on the German playwright Maja Zade’s feverish reinterpretation of the famous Greek myth.

Summary

Christina runs a chemical company in Greece, until an investigation is launched to assess her company’s true environmental impact and the consequences for public health. Tensions arise within her own family – a brawl between her brother and her employee, who is also her lover and the father of her unborn child – and buried truths resurface: every character bears the scars of both overt violence and the unspoken kind. Will speech be the saving escape from fate?

Four performers enter and exit at will from a central arena – a circular set of effective simplicity, drawing as much from ancient traditions as from street theatre. Each joins the action at the heart of the agora or becomes a spectator, redefining a space centred on movement. All are approachable, friendly, even endearing at first glance, an image that Héloïse Ravet takes pleasure in subverting by reworking certain circus conventions.

In the Oedipal tragedy rewritten by Zade, it is the mother-wife of the eponymous hero who is at the heart of the play. Here, the demure widow gives way to the archetype of the boss lady in the guise of Christina. Oedipus explores power dynamics and predation, rape, and disconnected, incestuous social classes. The myth is set against the backdrop of the #MeToo era and the rise of free speech.

Rectum Crocodile sounds like the title of a quirky noir novel, but it is a fabulous tale in which the characters parade in magnificent finery. Thus, ghosts, humans and beasts mingle, trees speak, and together, this colourful crowd attempts to atone for a stubborn colonialism.
